Jan Van Breda Kolff, son of legendary basketball coach Butch Van Breda Kolff, has both an impressive sports heritage and a passion for transformation. With a career that spans collegiate, NBA, and international leagues, Jan has left an indelible mark as both a player and coach. His journey began at Vanderbilt, where he was named SEC Player of the Year, followed by a nine-year professional career in the ABA/NBA, most notably with the New York Nets.
Transitioning into coaching, he took up key roles at institutions like Princeton, Cornell, and Vanderbilt, leading his teams to multiple postseason appearances. Beyond his court achievements, he founded VBK Hoops, a youth basketball initiative, and has since dedicated his post-coaching years to mentoring – emphasizing life skills, leadership, and mental health awareness.
He feels passionately that youth sports should be a source of joy and growth – a place where important life lessons are learned, and relationships are built that will mold and strengthen the adults these eager young kids will become.
Coach VBK hosts weekend seminars for players, parents, and coaches to share stories and build a supportive community focused on optimism and learning. Throughout the season, he provides personalized consultations to middle and high school coaches, offering guidance on practices, game planning, and effective communication with parents and players.
Through insights from years of experience, Coach VBK shares valuable lessons on mastering basketball fundamentals, building mental resilience, and achieving personal excellence. Whether you're an athlete, coach, or simply striving to unlock your potential, this blog offers actionable advice and motivating stories to help you grow.
